Figs

Common Figs (Ficus carica)

‘The “Common Fig” is a remarkable fruit tree prized for its sweet flavorful fruit. Despite it’s name, many figs are anything but common. Most “Common Fig” varieties are self-fertile, meaning they do not require another tree to produce fruit. They also don’t require a fig wasp for pollination like some other varieties do, This makes them an excellent choice for home gardeners and small-scale growers. Their compact size and resilient nature make them ideal for container growing, but can also be planting in-ground if wrapped for insulation during winter. Some protection is recommended for northern fig growers as even cold hardy varieties of figs can have significant die back from cold winters. That being said, the Hearty Chicago is reportedly hardy to zone 5B, and we are currently attempting to grow them unprotected in the ground over winter in our 5B growing zone.

Our nursery specializes in cold-hardy fig varieties that are better-suited to northern climates.

Figs generally produce fruit in fall on new growth, however some varieties also produce a breba crop in summer which grows on last year’s wood growth,

Fun Fact: Figs are technically not fruits, but are inverted flower structures called a syconium. Each ‘fruit’ contains hundreds of small flowers.

The size of each will depend on the variety and stock levels. Dormant cuttings can be shipped from fall to spring as long as outdoor temperatures are warm enough to ensure safe transport. Cuttings may be grown indoors over winter to give them a head start before the gardening season, or kept revridgerated untill spring as long as they dont freeze.
