The Curiosity Labs

Building with nature, growing abundance

At The Curiosity Labs, we are passionate about redefining the way we coexist with the natural world. We are dedicated to developing materials and manufacturing methods that enable the creation of sustainable, healthy buildings and products, with a focus on real world solutions. We are exploring innovative materials like geopolymers and bio-based composites, while also revisiting ancient materials such as cob, stone, and bamboo. By developing and sharing eco-friendly solutions, we aim to empower individuals and communities to build high-performing, beautiful, and affordable homes and infrastructure. A key focus of our efforts is the Living Lumber Project, a groundbreaking initiative to create entire structures — foundations, walls, and roofs — using living tree materials.

A major focus of our efforts is our Living Lumber Project, a groundbreaking initiative to create entire structures—foundations, walls, and roofs—using living tree materials. This approach represents the pinnacle of sustainable construction by merging natural growth with architectural design. We are also exploring the use of bio-based materials, such as “mushroom leather” and biopolymers for use as textiles, packaging and disposable item. Supplementing our other research, we are developing a permaculture garden with a wide range of cold hardy plants that thrive in the harsh Canadian environment. We have opened an online store offering high quality plants from our nursery to customers interested in growing edible plants, and their purchases will contribute to our ongoing research.

Founded by a structural engineer with years of experience in construction management and engineering consulting, we are committed to providing high-quality information about our research to the public. We believe the technologies we are developing have the potential to play a significant role in reestablishing a harmonious relationship between people and nature, especially as the demand for housing and sustainable material supply chains grows in developing countries, and as the focus on sustainable products increases in more developed nations. Our goal is to inspire change, promote cradle-to-cradle ecosystems, and build public confidence in eco-friendly alternatives to help them gain mainstream acceptance. Together, we can create a more sustainable world.
